About Lanser Sutherland Inc.
When something goes wrong in healthcare, when treatment causes injury instead of healing, when an insurance claim is denied at your most vulnerable moment, you need someone who understands both the medicine and the law. Someone who will listen to your story, examine the evidence with care, and tell you honestly whether you have a case worth fighting for.
That’s what we do at Lanser Sutherland Inc.
Our Legacy
From Lanser Liedtke & Associates to Lanser Sutherland Inc.
Lanser Sutherland Inc. stands on the foundation built by Marietjie Lanser and KJ Lanser, who created Lanser Liedtke & Associates as a family-run practice with a strong ethical spine and a deep commitment to their clients.
Romany Sutherland first joined the firm between 2017 and 2019, working closely with Marietjie on complex medical negligence matters and discovering a shared love for both medicine and the law. That combination of clinical curiosity, careful thinking and human connection has shaped the way the firm works to this day.
In March 2025, Romany took over 100% of the shares in the firm and rebranded it as Lanser Sutherland Inc. While the name has changed, the heart of the firm has not: it remains rooted in the Lanser family’s legacy, with Marietjie and KJ still very much part of the “family” story behind the practice.
This firm honours their contribution and the values they instilled, values that continue to guide the work we do for our clients every day.
The Founders
Marietjie Lanser
Founder • Senior Medical Negligence Attorney (Retired)
Marietjie Lanser is the original heartbeat of the firm – a professional nurse turned medical negligence attorney who built the practice on a love of both medicine and the law. After qualifying and working as a nurse and midwife around the world, she retrained as a lawyer and went on to found the medical negligence practice that became Lanser Liedtke & Associates. Romany worked closely with Marietjie from 2017 to 2019 and regards her not just as a mentor, but as family. Much of the firm’s culture – meticulous preparation, compassion for patients and families, and a calm, steady presence in complex cases – comes directly from Marietjie’s example.

Marietjie Lanser is the founding force behind what would become Lanser Sutherland Inc., and the architect of the firm’s reputation in complex medical negligence litigation.
Born in Griekwastad in the Northern Cape and later matriculating in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, she first qualified as a professional nurse with a B.Cur (Nursing) from the University of Pretoria and registered as a midwife and psychiatric nurse. Before entering law, she lectured in nursing education and administration and worked across the globe – including the Caprivi, Malawi, Bahrain, Canada, France, Indonesia and Thailand – gaining a rare depth of clinical and cross-cultural experience.
On her return to South Africa, Marietjie completed her LLB through UNISA and was admitted as an attorney in 2003. She practised at Mostert & Bosman before joining Henry Shields Chiat Inc (later DSC Inc.), where she established and headed the firm’s medical malpractice department. In 2012 she founded Marietjie Lanser Attorneys, dedicated exclusively to medical negligence work, and in 2014 her practice merged with KJ Lanser Attorneys and Fred Liedtke to form Lanser Liedtke & Associates Inc. (LLA Inc.), the predecessor to Lanser Sutherland Inc.
Over more than two decades in practice, Marietjie acted in numerous High Court matters and was the attorney responsible for several reported appellate decisions in favour of injured patients. Her combination of clinical training, international nursing background and legal expertise laid the foundation for the firm’s ethos: meticulous preparation, deep respect for patients and families, and unwavering commitment to accountability in healthcare.
When Romany joined the firm in 2017, she and Marietjie quickly discovered a kindred spirit, and a similar way of holding both compassion and rigour in difficult cases. That working relationship grew into a friendship that continues today.
KJ Lanser
Founder • Conveyancer & Property Law Specialist
KJ Lanser brought the same care and grounded wisdom to the firm’s conveyancing and property work that Marietjie brought to its medical negligence matters. A seasoned attorney, conveyancer and notary, he built a strong property law practice and helped shape the firm as a family-focused, approachable space where clients felt at home. His practical, down-to-earth style and long-standing relationship with Romany mean that, even as the firm has evolved into Lanser Sutherland Inc., KJ remains an important part of its story and its sense of “family”.

KJ matriculated in 1979 in Heidelberg and went on to study at the University of Johannesburg, qualifying with a B.Com LLB. He was admitted as an attorney, conveyancer and notary public in the early 1990s and quickly established himself in the Johannesburg commercial and property market.
He served his articles and later became a partner and director at De Vries Inc. (formerly Van Wyk De Vries Attorneys), where he headed the conveyancing department from 1997. After stepping down as director of DSC in 2011, he continued practising under the name KJ Lanser Attorneys until 2014, when his practice merged with Marietjie Lanser Attorneys and Fred Liedtke to form Lanser Liedtke & Associates Inc. (LLA Inc.).
With nearly three decades of conveyancing experience, KJ ensured that the firm could handle property transfers, bonds and notarial work with the same care and precision that characterised its litigation practice. His steady presence, practical wisdom and deep understanding of risk in property transactions helped shape a culture where clients could entrust both their homes and their most complex medico-legal matters to one integrated, family-run firm.
For Romany, KJ has been both colleague and family: someone whose grounded, down-to-earth advice and quiet humour have supported the firm through many transitions. Even as the practice has evolved into Lanser Sutherland Inc., KJ remains hands on and an important part of its story and identity.
Romany Sutherland
Director • Lanser Sutherland Inc.
Romany Sutherland is the director of Lanser Sutherland Inc. and carries forward the legacy of the Lanser family practice. In March 2025 she took over 100% of the shares in the firm and a year later, she has rebranded it as Lanser Sutherland Inc., keeping the family ethos while growing its medical law and insurance profile. For Romany, the firm is both home and legacy – a place where rigorous law, medical complexity and real human stories meet.

Romany Sutherland first joined Marietjie Lanser on complex medical negligence cases in 2017. Very quickly, it became clear that they shared the same deep fascination with medicine and the law – and the same instinct to hold both scientific detail and human vulnerability with care. Those years (2017–2019) laid the groundwork for a working relationship that grew into a genuine friendship and a shared vision for the future of the firm.
After gaining further experience as a director at an international law firm and continuing to build her specialist practice in medical negligence, Romany returned to the Lanser fold – this time to take the reins. In March 2025, she acquired 100% of the shares in the firm and rebranded it as Lanser Sutherland Inc.
While the name on the door has changed, Romany’s intention was not to replace the legacy of Marietjie and Korstiaan Jan (KJ) Lanser, but to carry it forward. Under her leadership, the firm continues to focus on medically complex, high-stakes matters – combining detailed forensic preparation with straightforward, compassionate communication for clients and their families.
